What is psychotherapy?

Foremost, it is a gift to ourselves and those around us. In psychotherapy, we allow ourselves an opportunity to reflect upon what is working and what is not working in life. By allowing oneself the time and space to explore our relationships – to others, to the world, and to ourselves – we undertake a courageous journey. We enhance our understanding of experiences that influence our behavior. We might wonder, “Why do I respond in a particular way to my friends or spouse or children or situations?” Tracing our current experiences to those in our early life is instructive; when we link our present to our past, we are better able to understand who we are in the here and now.

One may come to psychotherapy (once a week, once a month or several times a week) with a particular idea of something to discuss, a question to explore or with the feeling “I have nothing to say”. The starting point does not so much matter. What matters is the openness to understanding the self – indeed, the only place where we have the power to make change.
